The Britannia
The city of Edinburgh has many direct links with the royal inhabitants of Buckingham palace in London. The royal yacht Britannia is one such link and now available for public viewing. The Britannia was the queen's world famous yacht and was an overseas symbol of royal majesty. It's luxury and its well fitted state rooms were literally fit for a king - well queen. The ship served as an international ambassador for the Royal family and Britain itself. Some of the worlds most famous stars and heads of state have walked the corridors and been served British cuisine. The ship was launched in 1953 and sailed over a million miles before being decommissioned in 1997. The yacht is at anchor in the port of Leith and is 2 miles from Edinburgh's city centre. Access to the 412ft yacht is through a visitors centre designed by Sit Terence Conran. Visitors may take guided tours through the five decks. It is possible to visit he drawing room, the royal apartments, the engine room, the galleys and the captain's cabin. You will be walking on decks where Prince Charles and Lady Diana strolled on honeymoon. Visitors may access the yacht from 10am until 3.30pm daily (except Christmas day). Adults are charged £8 and there are reductions for groups, families, senior citizens and children.
