Carleton Hill

Carlton Hill is the site of the annually bonfire held during Hogmany. This is a hill off Refent Road and has been called a hill of monuments. It reminds those who visit it of Athens- and this is in no small part due to the part construction of the Parthenon in 1824. The idea was to create a monument to commemorate those Scottish soldiers killed in the Napoleonic wars, unfortunately money ran out and the monument was never fully completed- creating some instant ruins- this particular monument is sometimes known as Scotland's Shame.
One of the dominant features of the hill is the Nelson Monument that contains relics of the famous navy commander. The monument was constructed in 1815. It is over 100 ft tall. The monument is open daily. A time ball at the top drops everyday at 1pm (except weekends).
The Lincoln Monument is also located nearby. This was erected by the citizens of Edinburgh to hour the memory of the thousands of American soldiers of Scottish descent who were killed in the American Civil War.
Visitors often take time to meander down to the old cemetery to visit the tombs of famous Scots.
Carelton Hill is known for its superb panoramic views over the Firth of Forth and of the city itself.
