One of the grandest gardens in Britain is found along Inverleith Row. The Royal Botanic Gardens sprawls across 70 acres and dates from the late 17th century. It is famous for it flowering rhododendrons (for those that don't know- Spring is best to see them). Admission is by donation. The area below Edinburgh Castle is one of the city's prettiest of locations. This was he site of the Nor' Loch that was drained to make way for a railway line. One of the famous stories about the place revolves around the atheist and philosopher David Hume who fell into the marsh adjacent to the Lock and was only able to extricate himself with the umbrella of a passing woman- only after when she demanded he say the Lord's Prayer before offering help. |
